With encouragement from UofO Architect and Professor John Briscoe, Jeff pursued a career in construction management. A path that provided an adventurous journey that lasted decades.
Construction management was an alternative project delivery method that began to evolve in the early 1960's. The first construction management contracts originated in Georgia about 1968.
Design / build evolved from the construction management movement. In theory, design / build removes the risk of traditional building practices where the contractor blames the architect or engineer for design flaws causing the owner to incur additional project costs.
In 1993, the Design-Build Institute of America was formed.
Chuck Thomsen was Chairman/CEO of 3D/International, and a renowned expert regarding alternative project delivery methods.
During the 1985 National AIA Convention in San Francisco, Jeff attended the Project Management seminar hosted by Chuck Thomsen.
After the seminar, Jeff and Chuck, by chance, shared a taxi ride. They continued the project delivery conversation starting a relationship that would last for years.
In 1991, Jeff reached out to Chuck for more advice. Chuck arranged a visit to mentor Jeff's innovative design / build firm, PC/M Group, Inc.
Soon thereafter, PC/M Group and 3D/I collaborated to manage a design / build effort for what would become known as the Bank of America / Security Pacific Bank merger of 1992, one of the largest bank mergers in history.
